Mrs. Meyer’s: What’s the Big Deal? The Joy of Dish Washing + Fall Scents are Here!

I recently had a friend ask me (while eyeing the Mrs. Meyer’s dish and hand soap balanced on the back of my kitchen sink), “What’s the big deal with Mrs. Meyer’s products?” In my opinion, here’s why they are so popular (and why I love them):

  • Natural-based ingredients
  • Reasonable prices
  • Unique and beautiful scents–including limited-edition, seasonal scents!

also…

  • Beautiful labels. Certainly not the most important factor to consider when choosing a cleaning product, but one that matters to me. Even a beautiful dish soap label can add just another bit of delight to life.

I am always looking for natural-based products that smell good . For me, Mrs. Meyer’s products fit both criteria.

If you are curious about the ingredients included in every Mrs. Meyer’s products, you can find an ingredients glossary here: https://www.mrsmeyers.com/about-us/ingredients-glossary/

My favorite scents:

  • Rainwater: a lovely, fresh, clean linen-type smell that I discovered over the summer and find lovely for year-round use. I love it especially as a hand soap–it’s my current favorite!
  • Fresh Cut Grass: a clean, summer scent (slightly more floral/sharp than Rainwater) that I love as a dishsoap
  • Basil: don’t be dissuaded by the name, this scent is sweeter and less pungent/sharp than its herb namesake. Plus, once again, the label is lovely–a beautiful green.
  • Mum: a gorgeous, strong floral scent (I absolutely love the color and design of the label, as well). This is a limited edition fall scent, so grab it while it’s here! A tip for those with aggressive poopers in the family: the mum scent in the toilet spray is unmatched for covering strong #2 smells.
  • Rose: smells very like rose! This floral scent is softer and less strong than the “mum” scent.

The most common scents (which you most likely can find at any Giant/Walmart/Target) are the Honeysuckle, Lemon Verbena, and Lavender. I am not a big fan of any of these–especially the lavender. I LOVE the natural scent of lavender, but not of this soap…it’s very sweet-smelling, and does not smell like the flower in my opinion.

Still, try it out! Sniffing sensibilities are as unique as the people to whom they belong–every scent deserves a sniff!

Tips for purchasing Mrs. Meyer’s:

  • Do not be turned away by the name. Rarely do the scents smell exactly like their name (i.e. “Basil” definitely does not smell like Basil; “Lavender” is definitely not your typical lavender scent, and “Fresh Cut Grass” has a much more delightful scent than its name might indicate).
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment and try a new scent! While I like to order through Grove Collaborative, you can also often find a more limited selection of Mrs. Meyers products at Giant or–for a better selection, in my experience–Target. Before I order from Grove, I will sometimes pop in to Target to have a sniff at a new scent to make sure I like it!
  • Try different cleaning products in the same scent: I find that some scents I prefer as a hand soap (like Rain water), others as a spray (Mum, Rose), while still others, as a dish soap (Fresh Cut Grass).

I strongly concur with my mother in law who says that these scents make washing dishes more fun! While I don’t exactly look forward to washing dishes, when push comes to shove and it just has to be done, I do look forward to using these lovely scents and to the aroma that rises from the hot, sudsy water as I skim my sponge over the dirty dishes in our sink.

A note on hand soap

I prefer the “normal” hand soap (pump style) https://www.grove.co/catalog/product/mrs-meyers-hand-soap/?v=5&attrsrc=22&attrpg=catalog&attrpos=6 over the foaming hand soap https://www.grove.co/catalog/product/meyers-foaming-hand-soap/?v=281&attrsrc=22&attrpg=catalog&attrpos=25 only because the foaming soap seems to run out so fast for me.

Conservation tip: once the hand soap has gotten an inch or so below the top of the bottle, I will fill the rest of the bottle up with a little purified water. In my experience (note that I am NOT speaking as a health professional or germ expert, here), soap is often more concentrated than it needs to be, so this dilutes the soap while also making it last longer.

Purchasing through GROVE Collaborative

I have loved shopping online through GROVE Collaborative over the last year. They are a one-stop-shop for natural-based cleaning, body, and beauty products. They also provide excellent customer service and fast shipping. I almost always buy my Mrs. Meyer’s products through them and combine my order with other natural-based body and cleaning products. I will be featuring some of my other favorite cleaning/body/laundry products from Grove in future posts, but for now, use this link to get $10 off your first order! https://www.grove.co/referrer/69278106/
